Bull (puppy)

Organized by Vernon County Humane Society

My bandages are removed now!
Hi everyone, guess what, my bandages are removed because my wounds are healing extremely well! I am living in a new foster home and there are some applications for my adoption so my sad story has turned into a success story, thanks to all of you who have contributed to my vet bills. THANK YOU SO MUCH for caring about me. I'm going to live a normal life from now on!
I like cats!
Hi everyone it's me again. I am doing a little better, but I still
have to wear these bandages on my feet. I get around a lot better though. I've made some new friends here. My foster family has these creatures called cats and the big guys are okay, they just think they are dogs because they hang out with us, and there not even scared. They even have a baby one, he used to live at the shelter but my foster family adopted him. He is cool, we hang out alot. We play, and play, and play! Then after we are all pooped out we sometime snuggle up together and nap. He has soft fur, he makes a good pillow and he doesn't even seem to mind. Sometimes we just sleep by each other and that is okay too. I also like going out in the yard to play with the big girls. I'm getting a little faster but can't keep up YET. But we have funny anyway. Well I have to go, it's nap time. You should come to the shelter to see me, I hang out in the office sometimes during open hours.
The daily foot bath and bandaging routine

Hi everyone, this where I get my treatments several times daily. I get my feet soaked and bandages changed. I get ointments on my burned skin. Everything must be very clean. It hurts so much to have my feet worked on but I am trying to be a good boy.

Here I am getting my paws soaked in water, the first step. I have to wear this stupid collar around my head because I keep trying to gnaw off my bandages.
Little Bull is definitely improving fast! YAY.
Hi everyone, it's me, little Bull. I am doing a little better. I am learning how to get around with these bandages on my feet, but I don't like them. I try to go in the yard and chase my foster sisters around but they have longer legs than me and it's hard to keep up. But I will grow up soon and maybe then I will run like they do. Fast. I hope I heal fast, because these bandages slow me down too, but the vets say I have to wear them until I am all healed.

I learned what a reflection was the other day and it was a little scary at first because I thought there was another dog running at me and barking. But my foster mom explained that it was just my own reflection on the closet door mirror. She was laughing at me. But I don't worry about it now. I rather like looking at myself. I think I'm kind of handsome if I do say so myself. What do you think?

Well I gotta go for now, my foster mom says it's time to change the bandages again. I don't like that, it hurts, but she says it has to be done so I will heal. But I get lots of love afterwards so I guess it's not soooo bad.
Please Help Me!!! I'm Bull.

I am Bull, a lab-husky mix puppy, and I was burned in a fire on Sat. Jan. 22. Three of my legs and my paws are all burned. I'll be in treatment for weeks and weeks. It's very expensive.
Can you help us help Bull?
Vernon County Humane Society is a small, rural, no-kill shelter in SW Wisconsin and the recession has been hard on us. We are local, private, and independent. We don't receive funds from the Humane Society of the United States. The county isn't responsible for our budget either. It's just us and the animal lovers nearby.

There is no question, we are going to help Bull recover, God willing that he doesn't develop a terrible infection. We'll do what it takes. But we have a building full of homeless dogs and cats still waiting for homes, some for many months. Many mouths to feed, lots of bills.

Bull says Thank You, and the board of directors and volunteers and hardworking staff say Thank You too!
Bull's recuperation is begun

Saturday evening, his legs and paws were cleaned and soothing ointments applied. His raw open wounds were wrapped lovingly by the caregivers at Animal Tracks Vet Clinic. He started a regimen of antibiotics and pain medications.

The first night was the hardest for little Bull. He missed his mother and brothers and sisters. But his foster family's dog Cara is a loving dog and she kept Bull close by her side all night long. He was so tired.

And so his recuperation begins. He needs twice-daily soakings and daily debriding of the scabs, which is EXTREMELY PAINFUL for little Bull. He cries and cries.

We don't have an estimate to share yet about what Bull's care might be, but we are very worried about it. Can you help us?
Puppy Bull was burned in a dog house fire
Vernon County Humane Society received a frantic phone call on Saturday, Jan. 22, from a woman who had 9 six-week-old puppies enclosed an outdoor box-like dog house. (The mother dog was inside the home.) The dog house was being warmed with a heat lamp in the frigid winter weather. From a window in the home, the family noticed smoke rising from the top of the dog house. Investigating quickly, they found that the playing puppies had knocked the heat lamp down into the hay bedding, starting a blaze! They got the puppies out as quickly as they could.

One puppy, Bull, was burned on three legs. Three of the puppies were barely moving, suffering from smoke inhalation. The other five puppies thankfully appeared to be unaffected somehow.

The woman surrendered the four injured puppies to the humane society as she was unable to afford veterinary treatment. The three puppies who were suffering from smoke inhalation were experiencing difficulty breathing, and they continued to decline throughout the afternoon. Later in the evening as they struggled to breathe and refused even little dribbles of water, the compassionate decision was made to end their suffering. All three little puppies together laid quietly in loving arms while they went to sleep forever. It was a difficult and very sad experience. But there was no hope of their recovery. Their baby lungs were too delicate.
